Movie Review: Fearless Hyena 2

Fearless Hyena 2 (Long Teng Hu Yue)
Starring: Jackie Chan, Dean Shek Tien, Yen Shi Kwan, Kwan Yung Moon, James Tien Chun, Chan Wai Lau, Austin Wai Tin Chi, Hon Gwok Choi, Pearl Lin Yin Zhu, Man Lee Pang
Director: Chan Chuen
Lo Wei Motion Pictures, Hong Kong, 1983.
This is an early Jackie Chan movie, the review is based on English dubbed version from Jackie Chan Early Collection 6-movie box set published by Pan Vision Finland. (The films are of VHS quality, but it is not easy get better versions with original Cantonese soundtracks).

Heaven (Yen Shi-Kwan) and Earth (Kwan Yung-Moon) kill the entire Yin-Yang clan. Two Yin-Yang's escape with their sons. Beggar clan helps Chang Chi Pei and his son Ah-Tung to hide. Chi-Nam and his son hide elsewhere. Years later Shing Lung (Jackie Chan) catches fish and frogs. His father Chi-Nam (James Tien Chun) wants him to get a job.

Shing Lung goes to a restaurant to meet the boss. His name is Shark Jaws 4 (Dean Shek Tien, funeral office boss in the previous movie). There is a funny scene with Jackie working in restaurant.

Chang Chi Pei's (Chan Wai Lau) son Ah Tung (Austin Wai Tin Chi) is lazy. He has build many machines to help in everyday jobs for example a machine that delivers breakfast in bed. The contraptions remind of similar inventions in Finnish Uuno Turhapuro comedies. Beggar Siu (Ma Cheung) sends his daughter Ha Ling (Pearl Lin Yin Zhu) to find Chang Chi Pei's brother. A guy named Fong (Hon Gwok Choi) runs away from debtors. He comes to house of Ah Tung and tries to steal some food. Fong doesn't know about Ah Tung's burglar trap.

Shing Lung tries to win money with his friend from some thugs. Fighting them reveals that he knows the Yin-Yang style. He and his father must flee the killers. Fong (aka Little Frog) and Ah Tung try to do some business together, but Fong is bested by Shing Lung in disguise. Also at this point Jackie double is used with fake beards. Heaven and Earth burn Chi-Nam to death. Shing Lung goes looking for Chang Chi Pei. He clashes with the Beggar clan and fights a bit with Ha Ling. Chang Chi Pei takes Shing Lung and Ha Ling to his house. Disguised Shing tricks Ah Tung and Little Frog to start training kung fu.

However Heaven and Earth kill everyone else so Shing Lung and Ah Tung go for vengeance. Ah Tung's traps come in handy in getting rid of the evil henchmen. Ah Tung steals the show in the end battle, Jackie's scenes are made using doubles and all too obvious footage from part 1. Also in the end battle John Williams' music from the Raiders of the Lost Ark is shamelessly loaned.

Jackie's double was used here
Jackie left the Lo Wei studio before the film was completed. The rest of the movie was combined from old surplus footage from Fearless Hyena, and using Jackie Chan doubles to fill the gaps. Overall the movie is a mess. This is not a direct sequel but more of an alternate version of Fearless Hyena 1. The fight scenes of Jackie are worse than average and show lack of enthusiasm. One of Jackie's worst from the Hong Kong era.

Rating: Very bad
