Movie review: Company of Heroes

Company of Heroes
Starring: Tom Sizemore, Chad Michael Collins,Vinnie Jones, Dimitri Diatchenko, Neal McDonough, Jürgen Prochnow
Director: Don Michael Paul
Destination Films, UFO International, Sony Pictures, USA, 2013.
The movie is based on a video game series of the same name. In 1944 American soldiers get an assignment from Lt. Joe Conti (Neal McDonough) to deliver some food stuffs in Ardennes. However they are attacked by German tanks. The survivors from the attack include sniper Nate Burrows (Chad Michael Collins), Lt Ransom (Tom Sizemore) who was demoted to a cook after a catastrophic mission and Sgt. Matheson.

The surviving soldiers begin to investigate why the area is so heavily guarded. They find out that the Germans are testing atomic bomb. A dying intelligence officer orders them to deliver some papers to a spy in Stuttgart. The Americans get some needed replacements from escaped POW Ivan Pozarsky (Dimitri Diatchenko) and British Air Force officer Willoughby (Vinnie Jones). Polish Pozarsky is a skilled knife fighter and Willoghby a badass bar brawler.

The group has to travel to Stuttgart and rescue a nuclear scientist (Jürgen Prochnow) before the Nazis get the atomic bomb ready. After some railyard gun battles and after stealing some uniforms they also meet a pretty spy Kestler (Melia Kreiling).

The movie tries to the catch the epicness of Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers with a bit of Inglourious Basterds. But the epicness stays mostly at cheesy level, this is a film based on a video game not real history. At half way the movie turns into spy movie. History enthusiastics will shudder because of many inaccuracies, Germans use what seems to be Soviet tanks and also German uniforms mix Wehrmacht and SS accessories. The guns have unlimited ammo and Germans will not hit anything except characters who are unimportant to the plot. However as a B-film it entertains to some extent similarly as old fashioned war adventures.

  2. American Flag on uniform not worn in WW2, Young soldier sniper said his father died fighting with General Pershing as did the the Lt, Pershing fought in ww1 1918, If his father died in 1918 he would never had been born. Same as the phony Lt with the US Flag on his shoulder.
