Movie Review: The Heat

The Heat
Starring: Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Demian Bichir, Marlon Wayans, Michael Rapaport
Director: Paul Feig
Twentieth Century Fox, Chernin Entertainment, USA 2013.

Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is smart but socially inept FBI-agent yearning for a promotion. She lives alone and even the cat is borrowed from the neighbour. She is sent to Boston to catch a cruel drug kingpin Larkin. Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy) is a foul-mouthed cop who does not know when to stop.

Shannon arrests a small-time dealer and Sarah comes to interrogate him without Shannon's knowledge. Shannon isn't happy about it. Shannon goes to meet her brother in jail, and tries to keep him from getting involved with Larkin. She decides to catch Larkin herself. To get promotion Sarah must try to co-operate with Shannon. They haven't got much in common but they both like big guns (no pun intended). Also both Mullins and McCarthy struggle to get recognition in male dominated police force.

During their investigations Ashburn also meets Mullins' crazy family with Jane Curtin as Mullins' mother. Marlon Wayans has a role as Sarah's assistant Levy.

Getting information about the suspects
The plot is standard cop movie, but the strength of the buddy-comedy is the chemistry between Bullock and McCarthy. Ashburn is a timid by-the-book agent whereas Mullins is raunchy and mean and often gets Ashburn into awkward situations. Movie has hilarious dialogue and one-liners. The movie is great fun and feels a bit like mixing "Rush Hour" with "Smack the Pony".
